Hello everyone! Can you believe there are less than 10 days until the Miss Teenage Canada pageant starts? I’m so excited!
Lately, I have been receiving lots of questions regarding the specifics of my platform. When I competed in the Miss Teenage Alberta pageant a few months ago, my platform was aimed toward ending cosmetic testing on animals. Since then I have done many public speeches, appearances, helped out with petitioning, and communicated with many brands who share the same goal. I am so happy to announce that it is officially ILLEGAL for cosmetic brands to test on animals in Canada!
This does’t mean that all cosmetics you purchase here will be cruelty-free, but it does mean that any Canadian brands will be!
I was so overjoyed when this happened and I could not be more thankful for everyone who helped to make this happen. After I heard news of the bill being passed, I decided to move my platform to another, broader cause: keeping our lakes/rivers/oceans clean and overall aquatic animal welfare.
I’ve lived beside rivers and lakes my whole life so I have seen firsthand the decline of our aquatic ecosystems. One thing we don’t realize is how sensitive our earth’s aquatic environments really are. For example, did you know that 80 percent of ocean pollution comes from land-based sources – oil, pesticides, septic tanks, dirt, discharge of nutrients, untreated sewage, run-off, farms, motor vehicles, ranches, etc? And that for every one million tons of oil that are shipped, one ton is spilled into the waterways?
My goal for my new platform is to educate the public about these issues and to discuss ways (from small to big) that we can help our environment. For example, did you know that by not eating meat for one year you can save 76 gallons of fresh, drinkable water? (And thats 76 gallons per person!)
A huge part of my platform is marine life. As a pageant titleholder, I have been given some amazing opportunities to communicate with a few very interesting organizations such as Dolphin Project , Keiko Conservation ,and Peta2 ! These amazing groups have taught me so much about marine life and the state of our world’s oceans, rivers, and lakes.
At the moment, my platform is pretty broad as I am aiming to educate about our world’s water and the life in it. In the near future I plan to organize some campaigns and fundraisers for more specific topics in this area! I have a few ideas so far, but until they are official I will leave you guys at this :).
Thank you all so much for supporting me through all my endeavours, I can’t wait to see what the future holds!
Until next time!
